DeLorean Back to the Future time machine arrives at Whitaker Center

A small crowd gathered on Tuesday to see a piece of pop culture work its way down Market Street and get hoisted into Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg.

After much rigging and the blocking off of the street, a full-sized, exact replica of Doc’s DMC-12 DeLorean time machine was held aloft and then carefully lowered through the window opening and onto the floor of the Whitaker Center. The car is part of a new POPnology exhibit.

Some of pop culture’s most iconic sci-fi characters, set pieces, artifacts and replicas can be seen at POPnology, a traveling exhibit, which opens Oct. 21 in an 8,000-square-foot space at the center.

POPnology is from the combination of pop culture and technology, showcasing how science fiction has become science fact.

In the Back to the Future film franchise, the DeLorean DMC-12 time machine is a time travel device, invented by Dr. Emmett Brown, made by retrofitting a DMC DeLorean vehicle with a flux capacitor.

Back to the Future day is celebrated on Oct. 21. That is the date Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown travel to, Oct. 21, 2015, in the 1989 film, “Back to the Future Part II,” which is a sequel to “Back to the Future” released in 1985.

POPnology is about “how fantasy became reality, and how that reality can impact kids in a positive way through different learning experiences,” said Meghan Clark, COO of Whitaker Center.

The exhibit chronicles the progression from science fiction to science fact and also shows emerging technologies.
